History in the making

Australian was born in 1956 from the meeting of Italian manufacturing tradition and a passion for tennis. From the very beginning, the brand has seen the sport as an expression of character, style and identity, creating garments that reflect the elegance and functionality typical of Made in Italy design.

The kangaroo: symbol of a winning legacy

In the 1950s, Australian tennis players dominated the international scene, embodying an ideal of play built on technique, elegance and discipline. It was an era that left a deep mark on the history of the sport and shaped its imagery.

From this legacy comes the name Australian, a tribute to a style able to stand the test of time and renew itself without losing its identity.

Its spirit is embodied by the kangaroo, a universal symbol of energy, drive and determination. Not just a logo, but a distinctive, recognisable mark that accompanies the brand on courts all over the world.

From the first sketch to today’s versions, the kangaroo has spanned more than seventy years of history, accompanying every transformation of the brand.

Since 1956: a journey through the Australian archives

1960s

In the 1960s, tennis was one of the most elegant and iconic sports. Clothing followed a refined aesthetic of lisle cotton polo shirts, white shorts, woollen garments and clean lines. Australian interpreted this language with great attention to detail, bringing fashion and sport together and creating collections that perfectly captured the style of the time.

1970s

From the 1970s onwards, tennis went through a period of major international expansion: tournaments opened up to an ever wider audience and champions became true global icons. Style changed too, moving beyond the more traditional codes and becoming an expression of personality, on and off the court. Australian accompanied this evolution by introducing colour into its collections and shaping bolder designs, the expression of a new creative spirit and of a society in full transformation.

1980s

In the 1980s, tennis became an ever more dynamic and engaging spectacle, where performance and style merged. Australian collections reflected the energy of the decade with coordinated tracksuits, vibrant colours and versatile garments designed for an active, contemporary lifestyle. The brand strengthened its presence in professional tennis, helping to define an aesthetic in which sportswear became a symbol of identity.

1990s

In the 1990s, sportswear became an integral part of European youth culture. Australian tracksuits, created for sport, stood out for their iconic colour combinations and became a signature piece of urban style too. Worn on and off the court, they represented a new way of living sport, blending functionality and aesthetic identity.

2000s

Australian continued to develop its sporting language, reinterpreting it in a contemporary key. Its bond with professional tennis remained central, while the collections opened up more and more to lifestyle, with graphics and colour palettes reflecting the sportswear aesthetic of the early 2000s.

Italian tradition, contemporary performance

Proudly Made in Italy

Where Australian style is born

Over 80% of our collections are made in Italy, between our Milan factory and a select network of partners of excellence in Lombardy.

We work with specialist workshops, where technical expertise, manufacturing experience and craftsmanship come together to bring each garment to life. Rigorous checks are applied at every stage of the production process to guarantee quality, precision and high standards.

Responsibility in every choice

For us, sustainability means acting responsibly, every day.

Durability is our first concrete commitment: we make garments designed to last, thanks to quality materials and solid construction. We recover leftover stock, reintegrating it into new production runs or giving it new value through dedicated projects, and we repair garments in our in-house tailoring workshop to extend their life cycle.

Finally, we donate unsold products to charities, turning surplus into a resource and supporting an ethical and responsible approach to our work.

Designed to last

Every garment is the result of a rigorous design process, grounded in technical expertise, manufacturing experience and meticulous attention to detail.

From the selection of yarns to the development of the pattern, every stage is closely followed by a team of 35 specialists – designers, pattern makers, product technicians and quality controllers. Finishes, seams, reinforcements and internal structures are designed and tested to ensure quality, durability and complete freedom of movement.
